She started as a customizer’s dream, then the task of her completion went to an Artist. Brought to Peru, Indiana, her canvas was the medium of art for 11 years. Created, fabricated, and always believe that the essence was driving, a car-star was born. Her Artist, the Owner and her inspiration, now looks from above, and his family has made the prolonged and difficult decision to let the Sled move to her next destination. She has a clean and clear IN title in our current family’s name. A masterpiece of road iron.
Care and precision lead us to our pure Custom. Chopped, channeled, ‘leaded’ with finished transitions and, of course, Frenched. All techniques used to customize our finished work of art. Coated in Autumnwood Brown it’s the base for our strokes of genius. Custom paint schemes abound, as the Artist was a sign painter from a generation where their hands finished what the mind started. Pictures do not do her justice, but they will indeed inspire. And to clarify, the body is all steel, with just a bit of fiberglass at the fender skirts, after all, she is a very refined Lead Sled – even though there’s really no lead.
Not to leave any part of this canvas untouched, her rich tan leather interior is the product of inspiration and hard work. Front power seats, center console, leather head liner, power window operation, tilt wheel just starts the list of customizations. Push button start and custom Stewart Warner gauges complete the factory and stunning dash cluster but it’s the antique kit paint at the metal trim that sets this chariot as stunning. Our Artist comes through again, going deep inside and hand painting the faux wood to ultra-nature. Her interior is show-stopping and races the heart.
Coaxed into the pure-custom engine bay is a Cadillac 472 cid V8 motor. New timing chain and water pump mark improvements. Vintage Air spells the details to drivability. Details and that beautiful engine fill the bay with sculpted presence. Firewall, fender panels, even the front radiator panels have been reworked and fabricated to show quality. An electric fan cools the custom aluminum radiator, power assisted boaster operate the rebuilt factory drum breaks and as reported, work to perfection. Power is transferred to a GM Turbo-Hydramatic 400 automatic transmission. All ends at a stock and regeared to 2.73 rear differential. Her undercarriage is uniformly undercoated and was built for use, as this really is no trailer queen.
Our thorough and exhaustive review, both mechanical and cosmetic, were performed by a lucky member from Lemon Squad. We say lucky, for being paid to spend time with this stunning machine is, well, just that. Remaining professional and objective, his review did reveal items that need attending. First and foremost is the need to address a slight leak of fuel at the Sled’s rear. Second is a pan leak at the tranny. Noted by the Family is the speedometer. The gauge is in need of calibration and has yet to be addressed. A stem to stern review of her paint and body work left the Inspector in simple bliss. Applying adverbs galore to his glowing review of the body, words like meticulously, supremely, and beautifully, the Inspector penned with objectivity. She’s a car, a canvas, and a product of achievement.
Recognized and awarded, she’s also driven. The Family members believe at least 15,000 miles have been logged since her completion. While not exactly sure, one just need to read the trophies, where they were won and do a little math, as in there and back. The first math is counting the trophies. 120 in all, from Best in show to Best Paint and Best Engine. And let us not mince words, she was driven there in comfort, style, and safety.
