She’s a wonderful German transplant and has been a California girl since landing in the States. Two families have owned this beauty and our current Owner tells the story of watching her just turn 100,000! Some might say it’s taken almost 60 years to ‘break’ her in, for she’s all original and worn like new. Oxymoron? Not when you have one of the world’s best built cars.
Light blue paint presents the incredible lines of the SL. Eye-browed fender accents and curvaceous tail all for an impression, even when she strolls away. There are two small areas of overlap and overspray, suggesting a repaint, but no records indicate said event. None the less, her lovely ‘originality’ sets beautifully, and she really makes an impression. Original chrome is slightly patinated, displaying an aged but refined uniqueness. Her top was replaced in 2000 and shows as new. And those factory hub caps, oh so original.
Light tan upholstery was refurbished in OEM leather in 2000. Her owners note that the carpet needs to be re-addressed as it is not perfected. All gauges and accessories are reported as functioning proper, even the original tube radio. Her steering column and wheel speak volumes to the car and love she endured, showing just a bit of age. The driver’s seat is slightly worn with a very small relaxation of the lumbar support aspect. Our Owners honor disclosure and transparency and were very thorough in their reporting.
Incredible, it appears that this 1.9 litre 4 cyl. motor has never been mechanically challenged and thus never touched. All running gear is reported as original and it is very likely she has her original clutch assembly – just amazing. The fuel system has been updated (tank clean, new fuel lines) and retrofit to accept today’s fuels. The twin Solex carburetors were recently rebuilt, completing the fuel refurbishment.
Our Pre-Purchase inspection was performed by Car Dr. and her low milage and loving ownership showed as she received a reliability rating of good heading towards excellent. Exterior cosmetics appear to have been the most challenging aspects in her thorough review. Most notably is the report of rust at passenger’s side rear quarter, which appears to not have yet penetrated through. And a wonderful mechanical report finishes her evaluation. To clarify, the radio indeed does operate, one just needs to be patient while her tubes warm up…..we love our ol’Beauties when they warm up.
Her first owner created a California girl. In 1968 she transferred her residence literally just next door. There was and is no need to ever change that which is already perfected. And appreciated. Featured in films like High Society and The Thrill of It All, she’s a timeless automotive jewel. Just picture yourself, like performer The Weeknd, pulling up in a 190 SL (2021 Superbowl Ad), now that’s classy.
