Purchased 27 years ago out of a salvage yard where the junk yard dog indeed did reside, she has been brought back to life with a bunch of hard work and $$$. GT/CS cars had a ‘special’ build, adding fiberglass rear deck and rear lens panel, side scoops, hood pins and driving lights just to name a few. Originally out of California, she now resides in Conway, South Carolina.
Lime Gold, she had a repaint 6 years ago and was an original Seafoam Green color. Correct GT/CS striping coordinate with the original color. DZUS quarter-turn hood pins along with functional louvered hood with integral turn signals. You will no doubt note the lack of Lucas fog lamps, they’re in a box waiting for that ‘special’ day. Missing are the factory GT styled rims, as she is riding on classic Cragar wheels. Rust free with the repaint, it was noted that very little was in need of attention during said repaints preparation. Chrome is stated as in excellent condition.
Totally refreshed from her dog days, it’s black and all back. All gauges and accessories are noted as working, even the 8 track tape player. Window operation has been addressed and they function proper.
What is believed to be the factory block, she was rebuilt apprx. 20 years back and Edelbrock carb and intake components added. The C-code motor is backed by a C-4 three-speed automatic, which, too, was rebuilt 2o years back. All running gear is stock or refurbished with factory components.
The independent mechanical review of this Special shows very good to excellent marks. Noted were just a few leaks – a tranny seal and at the rear differential. Lighting and electrical components received very good marks. Braking aspects were noted as very good. Also identified were very good suspension components, but the potential for a ball joint replacement was noted.
Ford is known for taking a great model of vehicle and adding both fun and functional components, thus creating something very special. This golden girl is a grand example of the FoMoCo’s marketing prowess. And the California Special gives a little homage to the Shelby line, as a few cool items indeed come from that corral.
