A 44 year history between a man and his Pony Car is significant. You get to know her habits and needs. And you also get to make what some might call an extreme improvement. Say, a canter to a gallop. Reported as a factory Boss 302, she now sports 428 with big block power car and stout running. Boss makes a statement while cruising the streets of Staten Island, NY.
Ford’s effervescent Bright Yellow, clads this beauty. Repainted in 1977 and reapplying her designated 302 stripping, she shows bright, beautiful and owns the image. Even though she was repowered at that time, our owner decided that the striping stays. Exterior features of the Boss package include the rear spoiler, rear window louvers and Magnum 500 rims. Era correct shaker hood pops through and shows that something is, well, unique in the engine bay.
Black vinyl upholstery makes up the interior, creating a muscle car tabernacle. There is as reported one small flaw in the driver’s bucket seat. Center console, dash and panels are accents with wood grain. Gauges, but for the clock, are functioning proper. Accessories and climate controls are reported as operating proper.
Purchased as a project, she arrived without a motor. Eventually a Cobra Jet, reported as an R code, 428 cid V8 motor was implanted in the sports stallion. There is room for power steering but the owner hasn't had time to put it in and has most of the part, but she does have power brakes. She has the drag pack oil cooler and the aforementioned Shaker hood scoop. Top-loader T-10 four speed tranny with Hurst shifter carries the massive power to a 31 spline 3.5 geared 9” rear Detroit Locker. Braking is transferred to disc’s up from and drums in the rear.
The thorough review of this Boss was performed by Lemon Squad. Effectively, their exhaustive analysis of the exterior reveals that she’s simply a 44 year old repaint. Items labeled as rust all were identified as surface, chips and dings were discovered and associated with father time. Mechanically she was found to be very good to excellent, no leaks discovered and the discerning review observed only potential residue. Drivability of this classic Pony was most acceptable but for one item disclosing a noise while proceeding over a bump. She’s just a wonderful, aged beauty.
Things just happened in the 70’s. The beginnings of a funny thing called a personal computer and the end, or so we thought, of the Pony car. A blend of Ford’s finer stallions, this Mustang is a combination of an original Boss 302 car fit with the mega power plant of a 428 Mach 1, allowing her to be enjoyed by one owner for over 40 years. A marriage made in Heaven? Nah, just a coupling for the street.
